Cervical mucus changes represent one of the most reliable physical indicators of approaching ovulation, shifting from a thick, sticky consistency to a clear, stretchy texture resembling raw egg white as estrogen rises toward its pre-ovulatory peak (Bigelow et al., 2004). This fertile-quality mucus supports sperm survival and movement through the reproductive tract, appearing for several days leading up to ovulation.

Cervical Mucus as a Fertility Signal

Tracking cervical mucus involves checking its consistency, typically at the vaginal opening, once or twice daily. Dry or minimal mucus following a period generally gives way to a cloudy, sticky texture as the follicular phase progresses, then transitions to the clear, stretchy, egg-white-like consistency in the day or two immediately before ovulation. After ovulation, rising progesterone causes mucus to thicken again and decrease in quantity.

Mittelschmerz: Ovulation Pain

Roughly 20 percent of individuals report a noticeable, usually one-sided, twinge or ache in the lower abdomen around the time of ovulation, a symptom termed mittelschmerz (Fukuda et al., 2010). The exact mechanism remains somewhat unclear, though it is thought to relate to the stretching of the ovarian surface as the follicle ruptures, or to mild irritation caused by fluid or blood released alongside the egg. This pain typically lasts from a few minutes to a few hours, occasionally extending to a day, and generally resolves without treatment.

Basal Body Temperature Shift

Basal body temperature, measured immediately upon waking before any activity, rises slightly, typically by 0.5 to 1 degree Fahrenheit, after ovulation has occurred. This shift results from increased progesterone production by the corpus luteum. Because the temperature rise occurs after ovulation rather than before it, this method confirms that ovulation has already happened rather than predicting it in advance.

Changes in Libido

Some research has found a modest increase in sexual desire around the time of ovulation, a pattern that would align with an evolutionary tendency toward increased fertility awareness during the most fertile portion of the cycle (Roney & Simmons, 2013). This effect, while documented in group-level research, varies considerably between individuals and is not a reliable standalone indicator for any single person.

Breast Tenderness and Mild Bloating

Mild breast tenderness and bloating can occur around ovulation, related to the estrogen peak that precedes the luteinizing hormone surge. These symptoms tend to be less pronounced than the breast tenderness and bloating commonly reported in the premenstrual phase, which is driven by a different hormonal pattern involving progesterone.

Combining Signs for Greater Accuracy

No single sign reliably identifies ovulation with complete accuracy on its own. Combining cervical mucus observation with basal body temperature tracking, an approach sometimes called the symptothermal method, provides a more complete picture, since mucus changes help predict the approach of ovulation while temperature confirms it has occurred.
